Museum in the Museum

MúzeumCafé 4.

The old building of the Koszta József Museum in Szentes is situated in the wonderful Széchenyi Gardens. A long country house, one section has been the home-from-home of many noted museologists, while the other hosts exhibitions. The place has a real ‘family’ atmosphere, creating an identity within the local community of museologists. The curators of the exhibition Museum in the Museum, Irén Fári and Éva Richter, highlight the work of former museum director, archeologist József Csalog. He not only discovered the world famous God with Sickle of Szegvár-Tűzköves, but was also the founder of experimental archeology in Hungary and a pioneer in the archeological research of Hungarian prehistory. Today visitors can see the 102 oldest books, including Albert Szenci Molnár’s Bible of 1608. Gyula László’s work of art depicting Celtic everyday life can also be admired in its original beauty. The finest items of the Szentes collection are also displayed, as well as the finds of archeological excavations which became internationally famous due to the work of museum founder Gábor Csallány, including the Szentes objects of the European exhibition Attila and the Huns, held in Speyer. The old museum houses the Archeological Collection of the Koszta József Museum, a documentation department and temporary exhibitions (open 9.00 to 13.00, except Monday). The museum also incorporates the Village Museum and Windmill (folk industrial site) of Szegvár, the former County Hall at Kossuth Square, a new exhibition hall, offices, the headquarters, the Péterpál Town-house, a Local History Collection and Interior exhibition, as well as Fridrich’s Photographic Studio and a Collection of Industrial History.
