Plans to establish a museum in Veresegyház

MúzeumCafé 44.

Sooner or later the idea of founding an independent museum is raised in nearly every dynamically developing small town. The reasons are relatively simple – consolidation of self-appreciation and local identity, an increase of educational standards and a growth in sensitivity to the values of the past. Needless to say, it is a long road from idea to implementation. There are many detours, sometimes with illusions, not to mention the fact that establishing and funding a public collection require a fair amount of financial sacrifice. Yet despite the difficulties, to found a museum represents a quality change in the cultural life of a small town. Something comes about that shows roots rich in values and the past is reflected in everyday life, since history is not a finished time line but continues, i.e. it bears a current imprint. An institution is established where the arts, many exciting objects of the past and curiosities find a home. They make people think and strive for perfection. Its significance is not utilitarian, yet its use is unquestionable: it relays values, radiates positive energy, makes people feel good, offers experiences, moreover, asserts positive human features. The names of the various districts and institutions in the town speak for themselves and topographically reflect the dynamics of the town’s rejuvenation. Veresegyház was granted urban status 15 years ago. Since then its population has doubled to over 16,000. The average age is under 40. A quarter of the population, almost 4,000 people, are under 18. Today the town has significant industry, unemployment is one per cent and the local authority heats all its institutions with thermal water. Crèches, kindergartens and schools mushroom, a sports centre is being built and cultural life is correspondingly bustling. A new initiative is being added to the latter: the idea that the town should at last have its own museum.
