Learn more about the organisation, and pursue a more significant role and a more effective flow of information – as President, Zsuzsa Renner intends to achieve these aims. Ms Renner was elected to head the organisation in March, with a 3-year appointment. Her goals include promoting ICOM’s activity in Hungary and more fully representing the country in ICOM. ICOM has members in 140 countries but only 110 national committees. It also has 30 thematically and regionally established international committees. ICOM’s General Conference is held every 3 years and its decisions represent the guidelines for the national and international committees. In addition, each national committee has its own guidelines for their respective country. ICOM’s recommendations are non-binding, since museums in each country operate in line with national legislation. In the international committees it is important that expectations become well-known in Hungary and we aim to assist the implementation of international standards. ICOM’s Hungarian Committee is the museological organisation with the highest number of institutional members. Everyone working in the field may apply for membership, but even those not involved in museums can also do so, provided their expertise and field of work can promote the implementation of ICOM’s goals. Ten per cent of membership fees remain with the National Committee and we also participate in tender applications. As elsewhere Hungarian museums are changing, which primarily involves better access and improved services for visitors.
