Possibilities and obstacles in Hatvan

“A good small town museum must be present not merely with its collection and exhibitions but must also presume a role in the life of the town as a kind of cultural centre”. So says Júlia Domán, a young museologist at the Hatvany Lajos Museum in Hatvan. However, she also feels that, due to the difficulties characteristic of public collections in Hungary, even the basic tasks a museum should undertake are often difficult to perform. She read history and ethnography, specialising in museology, and graduated from Debrecen University in 2003. She has been working in the Hatvany Lajos Museum since 2004. Her research centres on the cottage industry characteristic of Hatvan and its environs, as well as the history of the museum and its building.
